"Deep Packet Inspection", Take II

July 29, 2008

From the sometimes-bad-ideas-do-wither-on-the-vine department, MSNBC and Slashdot: Charter Communications Inc. is dropping plans to track the Web usage of some high-speed Internet subscribers, citing concerns raised by customers.

In the same press release, Charter assures us that “Our customers are always our first priority”.

I suspect that the fact that the Senate Commerce Committee was going to look into the practice was also a contributing factor to their sudden and unexpected ethical awakening, at least with regards to their customer’s data.

So you see, it can happen: bad ideas sometimes do die an early death.
